MMMmmm. my legs, knees, and feet are all sore. Why? twelve miles. I walked twelve miles today scouring the Logan Square neighborhoods to try and find a great apartment for tim and i to move to in two short weeks.
What is the problem here? it seems that anything less than $1100 is too small, and and anything over $1200 is waaaay big, which means lots of heating. We found two great places, but we're waiting to hear from one of them, and here's the crazy tale of the second one.
Basically, I was waiting to see this place for a while. It looked sunny and huge, and it was under $1200 with heat paid, a pretty big deal. There are several shifty things about this place:
1. At first, they wouldn't let us apply unless we declawed our cats. Quit the gasping! We're not declawing the cats. After my powerful negotiation skills, they agreed to charge us twice the deposit: $2300 and the cats would still be able to jump on couches and enjoy full body stretches.
2. They require a $50 fee for each person (both tim and i pay separately) for credit and criminal checks. Ouch.
3. They also require a money order (huh? why not travelers checks? or euros?) for the deposit.
4. They ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to rent to us unless Tim has physically set foot in the apartment. Hmmm. Apparently...no. there is really no explanation for that.
5. And all the good things: heat paid. amazing amazing amazing space. bedrooms are really great and shady. the kitchen is kinda weird but i like it.
And the other place we're looking at is two blocks down from our friends mai and kaye, across the street from nice bar, down the street from walgreens, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL kitchen. it had the drawers that you can't slam? you know? they just slide slowly to a stop. awww. and a beautiful dishwasher. and a practice room for tim! all to himself! little window and everything!
We'll hear about that place hopefully this weekend. Funny part of seeing that apartment: we saw it last night after. the woman showing it to us owned and rehabbed the building herself with her father. i told her about the declawing apartment and she was like, yeah, i work in a animal hospital, you don't want to do that. and i was like, yeah, totally. and then i was like, well, the only thing not terrific is that the bedrooms are kinda small.
kaye says "but you know, when you don't have homework to do, you won't spend a bunch of time in your bedroom.
and i say "yeah, tim and i really don't spend any time in the bedroom." pause. muster up best trombone impression: "wah waaahhhhh."
and the lady thought that was pretty funny. but i called her this morning and dropped off the application to rent and her eyes were all red---she had to put her dog down in the middle of the night. so, so sad. i am very sad for that lady.
so home again tomorrow. "back to work." ha.

Yay updates!
I saw the pictures of an apt. on flickr, was it Apt#1 of #2? In any case it looked super fancy!
Oh and I can I confess, that when I looked at the gmap I was reminded how weird it is to see an entire city with roads that are made into perfect grids. For some reason it really creeps me out.
What? People carefully planned their habitation of this space?
They didn't just roll in on large ships, braking onto land, and taking over like they owned the joint?
Best of luck in your apt. search! Waaahhhh I wish we were seeing you guys next week!!!! :(
I would totally buy that apartment on Flickr. If it was a house.
I'm glad you found 2 places! Why is ap #1 insisting on Tim being there first? Do they only rent to mountain men?:)
And why would they care if the cats are declawed or not? It's YOUR funiture.
Anyway. Good luck!
Courtney mentioned the declawing drama, and our solution was to force the cats to wear booties at all times. They will hate you for it, but goddamn if it won't be adorable.
or, you could just borrow an angry bobcat and when the landlord says "is your kitty declawed?" you could toss the bobcat at his head and yell "SHOW HIM YOUR CLAWS, SHEBA!"
You probably wouldn't get the apartment in that case, but it might be worth it.
Nadarine needs her own blog.
