Home again home again.

The bigger, the better

jiggity jog. tim and i made the treck via train, feet, blue line train, plane, and automobile from Cincinnati to Fargo, with a lengthy enjoyable stop in Minneapolis for Stine Family Christmas. Funniest part of the weekend? Up for contention:
Doug (Tim's Dad): So Scott, what are your goals for 2008?
Scott (Tim's brother): Well, I don't know. Right now our number one goal is not to get pregnant.

Right on, brother. Liz Stine and I saw a Frida Kahlo exhibit and I avoided my old roommate, but left the Walker feeling like I had just listened a Mahler symphony in its entirety, finished popcorn and watched Amelie for the first time, and also maybe ate some delicious milk chocolate along with a cup of hot chocolate made from 2% milk. Ephemeral?

Right now, the focus is on the future. The future of my sister's family, that is. Enjoying the vocalizing of baby Ben (pictured) and the short attention span of 3.5-year-old Leadh who easily succumbs to I, the master of distraction. Snowy pictures are coming!

A definition of Ruth. (and a story about cats)

. Ruth
50 up, 13 down
1.n. Grandmother or great aunt.
2.n. Sophisticated, intelligent woman between the ages of 14 & 55, usually attractive but not obscenely so. Reads fiction, listens to public radio, and drinks tap beer. Horrible at returing phone calls, even from the closest friends.
3. adj. (ruthie) objects/activities for excitable, outgoing young woman or girl with several equally excitable female friends.

1.n. Oh, my grandma is a total Ruth.
2.n. What? She never gave back your copy of that David Sedaris book? She pulled another Ruth.
3.n. I bought this ruthie baby backpack at Claire's yesterday.

I put this up on Urban Dictionary last year and forgot about it. Then Tim and I looked it up today and were both like, hey, this sounds like you! Oh, wait. You posted this. Whatever.

p.s. while writing this post, my friend mary came up and said hello and i didn't shut the door behind her properly. mimi (my cat) slipped out the door! mary and i stalked the halls of the roanoke and even checked under bushes outside. i came upstairs to grab a coat, and birdie (my other cat) greeted me with very worried meows. where's mimi? birdie cried. she's NOT IN THE APARTMENT! i know birdie, i said in soothing tones. thankfully, after the outdoor search, mary and i walked around the building and all of sudden, mary cried (and pointed) "there she is!" for a moment, i thought it was an ill-timed joke because she sounded so excited. but no! mimi was upstairs looking at us. we walked up and she bolted for our door, and when she walked in, birdie gave her an impetuous kiss on the cheek and tried not to show how worried she had been. Oh, that birdie. here is a picture of them, just so you know how cute the are together.

This photo? Not posed.

An the advice of Shannon.

Oh Ruth! We love you too!

As a testament to that, this is probably my most embarrassing moment of 2007, which I guess isn't that bad, really.

Basically, I started bawling while trying to give a toast at my brother's wedding. Damn you, emotions!

More gifts. Strictly for me.

1. Cat Leash $14.99
That's right, my cats want to get out of the house, okay? And I am not going to deny them that right, even if I look like a complete idiot.

2. Lyra Art Work $30.00
Yes, I loved the His Dark Materials trilogy, but there's something about this piece as well...I think I looked like that when I was 6.

3. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings: 100 Days and 100 Nights $12.99
Yes! This band is wonderful, beautiful, and full of horns and sass. They make Amy Winehouse look like Britney Spears. Or Winona Rider.

4. New Growth vs. Old Growth Print $20.00

5. Subscription to Bust Magazine $19.95

6. No link here, just a suggestion: anything to do with organizing, labeling, filing, etc. Me love organizing. Desk, school work, kitchen, socks, whatev.

Books for sale!

Only one more four page essay to go, fools! Then I'm done with my last ever autumn quarter of graduate school. To celebrate finishing two papers today, I decided to get rid of all the stoopid books I do not want to move to Chicago. Do they look interesting? Because there's a couple I loved, a couple I needed, and a couple I didn't even crack. I leave it up to you to determine my love for them based on their descriptions below. Enjoy!

1. Managing Behavior in Organizations
Only the first chapter is highlighted...oh yeah. That's right. Manage the behavior in THAT.

2. Leading Teams
Hard cover. Devistatingly beautiful condition. It told me that it has been having dreams about you, about moving in with you and starting a smart, team based family. Please, give it the home it wants and needs.

3. The Discipline of Teams
This innocent book has been violated by one lone highlighted streak. Don't judge. Just love. (whispers) Buy. Buy ME.

4. Successful Fundraising for Arts and Cultural Organizations
Oh, this book. This book and me go back a long way. And by a long way, I mean, like one quarter of homework, grantwriting, and three months of putting off my final esaay and paper. SAY IT AIN'T SO!

5. Financial Accounting: An Introduction to Concepts, Methods, and Uses
Mmmm. Glossy hard cover. Inside covers brimming with ratios, summaries, rules and terms. This is no regular book. And it deserves and special owner. Not someone who simply enjoys accounting. But actually, that's fine too. All aboard! Financial Accounting is leaving the station!

6. Financial & Strategic Management for Nonprofit Organizations
This book here only has markings where the good stuff is. Gotta get it with your good foot, nonprofit managers.

7. How To Run a Theatre
Hey, I don't even need this book on my shelf! I bought it early, and then professor didn't get tenure...sooooahh...gotta get this puppy off my hands. Help a lady out.

8. The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator
Comments: Hey negotiators, let's "expand the pie" and make ourselves a deal. What? Didn't catch me lingo? Well, once this book is in your grubby paws, you'll be talking like a real gosher (that's short for negotiator) in no time.
